Biological media Matala is produced in the form of plain sheets made of interlaced polymer fiber. Due to such shape, the Matala material has perfect 3-dimensional distribution and has big free volume up to 94% (while the keramzite gravel has only 30% free volume).

Advantages:
- durable (is not affected by the UV-radiation)
- enviromentally safe (chemically and PH-neutral)
- is easily regenerated (either by intense air flow or jolting, if required the filter mats are withdrawn and the active sludge attached to them is easily removed by rinsing under the water flow)
- simple assembling (Matala mats are hard and don’t need additional frames to be placed in the tank).
Operating Principle:
The bacterial biofilm is gradually growing on the Matala material. Most clearly we can see it on the grey Matala filter mats with extra high density, that are used at the last stage in the Biofilter, where the small quantity of suspended solids is present.

Fields of application:
Waste water treatment: Matala biological media of low density can be used in the treatment plants of high capacity, not excluding the high-solids drains. The even flow that appears between the randomly situated fibers promotes intense biomass build-up, thus it is most effective
Local waste water treatment plants: Biological media Matala of high and medium density has high filtering capacity, thus is also used in the low-capacity biofilters. In this case the Matala filtering efficiency allows using fewer filtration tanks or filtration tanks of less volume

Storm wastewaters treating systems:
In storm wastewaters treating plants the biological media filters out the particulate matters.
Other variants of usage:
In the fisheries:
For nurturing shellfish and other fish. Biological media SM150 can be used for nurturing mussels. Other kinds of media promote growth of nitrobacteria and other plankton that exercises a salutary influence over the quality of biological filtration and the balance in the aquatic medium.
Water filtering in horticulture:
In sump or settlement tanks low-density Matala filtering material is more acceptable. If different kinds of Matala are installed sequentially, the suspended solids and bacterial flakes would be captured without plugging and anaerobc zones formation. When using the sequential method of filtering, the Matala sheets can be installed in multistage filters as a consolidating agent. The whole area or diameter of the filtering chambers can be filled and effectively used. In the systems with the cell-type cartridges other types of filtering material should be installed to avoid plugging and filter blockage.
Compact biofilters with Matala filtering material
It is known that organic sbstances and the lack of oxygen in water cause the water bloom. It happens due to the plentiful growth of blue-green algae, that are not only inaesthetic, but are also harmful for fish and animals, evolving the microcystine toxin. When these algae plague, the water turns green and later on gets muddy due to the dying algae reduction. The characteristic rotten smell appears, the oxygen is extensively absorbed. The pH of water abruptly decreases.
Many fish breeding specialists have problems with compact vortex chambers, when dirt or algae get sucked into the chambers with biofilters. Black and green Matala sheets can increase the effectiveness of the vortex chamber. Thread algae and suspended solid matters consolidate on the Matala filtering material. So, mainly it serves as the nitrobacteria carrier.
Matala also supplies a range of equipment used for ponds and pools water treatment, and also the equipment that can be used in a set with biofilters, submersible pomps, fountain devices, preventing its plugging with suspended solid matters.
